Stained Glass Repair & Protective Covering for First United Methodist Church in Bay City, Texas

First United Methodist Church in Bay City, TX have a sanctuary and chapel that both have stained glass windows.  The chapel has colored glass set into a wooden sashes for (7) windows and (1) window is leaded stained glass window.  The sanctuary has (10) windows on either side 24" wide x 128" high, which are beautiful hand-stained glass windows.  In the balcony area, they have one large hand-stained glass window approximately 270" wide x 190" high.  The windows in the sanctuary were covered by Lexan polycarbonate that had turned milky white or yellowed.  Some of the windows had minor bulges and needed braces re-soldered or new ones applied.  Some of the windows had rotten wood as well.  The chapel windows did not have protective covering.

In the spring of 2015, Laws Stained Glass Studios repaired the windows and provided new 1/4" Lucite acrylic protective covering.  The scope of work consisted of the following:

    • Remove the yellow Lexan polycarbonate and dispose of it.
    • Clean the exterior of each window
    • Scrape off any loose paint, prime and paint perimeter exposed wood.
    • Install new 1/4" Lucite acrylic protective covering using (1) row of 1/2" x 1/2" dark bronze aluminum stop to hold it in place.
    • Install vent buttons in each section of the Lucite to help prevent condensation.
    • Repair any rotten wood.
    • Straighten bulges, re-solder loose braces, and add any necessary braces.
